How AI is reshaping Hungary in 2026 — Tresorit, Prezi, Budapest tech, automotive AI around BMW Debrecen and a banking sector going through serious modernisation.
Hungary enters 2026 with a tech sector that quietly anchors a much larger industrial economy. Roughly 100,000 IT professionals work in Hungary, the BMW iX5 line in Debrecen began production in late 2025, and the CATL battery gigafactory adjacent to it is scheduled to ramp through 2026 and 2027. The combined automotive and battery footprint will reshape the Hungarian labour market in ways that have not been fully priced in yet. At the same time, the Budapest software ecosystem — anchored by names like Tresorit, Prezi, Cellum, Talk-A-Bot and Genezio — continues to ship globally relevant products. The Hungarian government’s Artificial Intelligence Coalition, which has been operating since 2018, refreshed its national strategy in 2024 and is co-funding the Komondor supercomputer with the EuroHPC Joint Undertaking. The Hungarian language is the country’s most underrated technical asset — and also its biggest challenge for foundation model adoption.
Sector-by-sector impact#
The Hungarian AI story has three dominant chapters in 2026 — automotive transformation, the modernisation of three large universal banks, and a smaller but globally visible software product cluster.
Automotive and battery manufacturing#
Audi Hungaria in Gyor, Mercedes-Benz Manufacturing Hungary in Kecskemet, Suzuki in Esztergom and now BMW in Debrecen run computer vision quality inspection and predictive maintenance across body shop, paint and final assembly. The battery story is even more important — CATL, Samsung SDI and SK On all operate or are building gigafactories in Hungary, and each runs serious AI work on cell chemistry, yield optimisation and thermal management. The Hungarian Investment Promotion Agency reports that automotive plus battery now accounts for more than 30 percent of industrial output.
Software products and engineering#
Tresorit, the encrypted cloud storage company acquired by Swiss Post in 2021, runs its largest engineering team in Budapest and is integrating AI document understanding with end-to-end encrypted workflows. Prezi remains the best-known Hungarian product company globally and has rebuilt large parts of its presentation engine around generative AI in 2025. Cellum, Genezio and Bitrise round out the product cluster. Morgan Stanley, BlackRock and EPAM operate large engineering centres in Budapest that increasingly hire AI specialists.

Banking and financial services#
OTP Bank, MBH Bank and K and H have all rolled out customer service copilots in Hungarian and English, and OTP — which operates across central and eastern Europe — has standardised an AI tooling stack across its subsidiary banks in Bulgaria, Slovenia, Croatia, Romania and Serbia. Hungarian National Bank guidance has aligned with the EU AI Act timeline. Revolut runs one of its largest engineering offices in Hungary and ships features globally from Budapest.
Pharma and life sciences#
Richter Gedeon and Egis have invested in AI for drug discovery, clinical trial document understanding and pharmacovigilance. Gedeon Richter’s API and biologics pipeline runs computer vision and statistical process control across multiple Budapest and Dorog sites.
Energy and utilities#
MVM, MOL and E.ON Hungary have invested in digital twins for power, gas and refinery assets. MVM operates the Paks nuclear plant and is investing in AI for outage planning and predictive maintenance ahead of the Paks II expansion.
Job categories growing and shrinking#
The fastest-growing roles in Hungary are battery manufacturing data engineers and process scientists tied to CATL, Samsung SDI and SK On, senior software engineers with generative AI experience commanding 800,000 to 1.5 million Hungarian forints per month gross in Budapest, MLOps engineers, and risk and compliance analysts at the universal banks. Demand for Hungarian-language NLP specialists has surged thanks to the public sector’s drive to keep services in the local language.
The roles under pressure are entry-level shared service centre positions, junior testing roles in software services, and template-heavy legal and accounting work. The country’s vocational system has been faster on automotive and battery reskilling than on AI, partly because the OEMs run their own training programmes.
Geographic distribution#
Budapest concentrates the vast majority of Hungarian IT employment. The Vaci ut corridor and the broader 13th and 9th districts host most multinationals and product companies. Debrecen is the rising industrial city — BMW, CATL and the University of Debrecen anchor a fast-growing engineering ecosystem. Gyor hosts Audi and a deep automotive supplier network. Kecskemet, Esztergom and Miskolc round out the industrial map. Szeged punches above its weight in pharma and life sciences AI thanks to the University of Szeged and the Biological Research Centre.

Policy and regulatory framework#
The Hungarian AI strategy is coordinated by the Ministry of Economic Development and the Artificial Intelligence Coalition, which now has more than 400 member organisations. The Komondor supercomputer at the Government Information Technology Development Agency provides national HPC capacity, and Hungary participates in the EuroHPC LUMI consortium. The Hungarian National Authority for Data Protection has aligned with EU AI Act timelines. Public sector AI deployments in the National Tax and Customs Administration and the Hungarian State Treasury have been faster than most European peers.
What is distinctive about Hungary#
Three things stand out. First, the depth of the automotive and battery industrial footprint relative to the size of the country — Hungary now manufactures more EV batteries per capita than almost anywhere in Europe. Second, the Hungarian language. Local NLP is harder than for most European languages, which has created a real market for Hungarian-tuned models and a public sector preference for sovereign deployments. Third, the strength of mathematics education. Hungary continues to produce a disproportionate share of internationally ranked applied scientists, and the diaspora that left for London, Berlin and Zurich is starting to return as senior AI talent.
What to watch in the second half of 2026#
A few developments will define the Hungarian picture into the back half of the year. The BMW Debrecen plant ramp through 2026 is the single most consequential industrial event in Hungary in a decade, and the supplier ecosystem around it — including CATL and the wider battery cluster — will reshape regional labour markets in eastern Hungary. The Hungarian Investment Promotion Agency is tracking more than 12 billion euros of committed automotive and battery investment that will land between now and 2028, much of it AI-intensive. Audi Hungaria’s EV transition at Gyor will test the country’s ability to retool an existing combustion plant for software-defined vehicles. OTP Bank’s regional AI tooling rollout across central and eastern Europe will set a reference architecture for universal banks across the region. And the Komondor supercomputer will see expanded access for Hungarian researchers and SMEs as the EuroHPC funding cycle progresses.
